Getting cozy with Print Competition

The words “Print Competition” bring fear into the hearts of many advanced and pro photographers. Fears and questions like; Why would I do this, I’m not good enough to have me work critiqued by Master Photographer’s, don’t know how to get started, Why does the judging seem tougher at PPA than at WPPI, How do I work towards a Master of Photography degree. This will be answered on the PPC March event. I’ll share 10 years of print competition knowledge with you on the rules, what it takes to do this, why you want to do this and how to improve your chances of receiving a score of 80 or higher out of possible 100 points. This 2 hour presentation will be packed with information, along with the video of the 2009 ASP Best of the Best.

See you there, Tom

Tom's program will show you:

  • How to enter
  • Why you SHOULD enter
  • What you can realize from competing
  • The 12 Elements of Design (this is what judges look for in a competition image
  • And more!

Program Schedule:

12:30p - Registration at the Blake Street Tavern - 2401 Blake Street - Denver, CO 20205 - MAP
1p - 3p - Tom's "Getting Cozy with Print Competition" info packed program.
3p - 6p - Image Critique. YOU are invited to submit up to 6 digital images for this very informative and extremely helpful critique opportunity. PPC's Masters of Photography including Jack Avalos, Rick Avalos, Karen Rubin, Patti Healy-Kelly and Jeff Johnson will gracefully yet constructively critique your images to help you build confidence in entering competitions and help to raise your print scores through the roof.

Here's what you will need to do. The event fee is $10 and that includes two images for critique. You may enter up to 4 additional images at $5 per image (max 6 images = $30). Go here to register for the event REGISTER HERE and then you will follow these instructions (BELOW) to submit your images. This is a digital format so NO PRINTED PHOTOGRAPHS will be allowed. And you MUST register and submit online. Images submitted at the event will NOT be accepted, please! Please prepare your images as if you were actually entering a print competition. Thsi means do ALL of the retouching, image enhancement, presentation and more. Images MUST be presented in a 16 x 20 format. The actual image does not have to be a full 16x20 and can be smaller with background or keyline but must be in a 16x20 format.

Cliff Lawson has graciously agreed to help with the image harvesting. Thanks Cliff! REALLY!

If you do not already have a Pando account, go to www.pando.com

Download the free version of Pando - it is a program that facilitates sending large or multiple files. When you open it, there is a drop-down menu at the upper left that says "Share New." Choose Email. A dialog box will open in which you enter this email address - clifflawson@comcast.net. Drag the images to send into the indicated box. Make the subject line "PPC Image Critique." This is IMPORTANT as it will send the images to the correct folder on Cliff's end. It is not a disaster if you forget, but it will help tremendously.

Name your files 100130-yourlastname-xxx.jpg The 100130 is the date and the xxx is any sequential number you wish.
So a file will look like this 100130-lawson-045.jpg

This naming convention makes it easy to retrieve any file of yours if needed.

For this purpose, keep your files to about 1000 pixels on the long side at 300DPI. Pando limits us to 1GB for a single transfer - you should be able to get everything in one transfer by zipping your images into one file.

REMEMBER . . . register HERE first. Then follow Cliff's PANDO.com directions second.
